William Robert Weir

BRIDGEWATER --- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Robert Weir, Sr., 95, formerly of Newfound Lake, on September 14, 2024, in Boscawen, NH, with his wife and family by his side.

Bill was born in Concord, NH on February 2, 1929, to Elwin (Al) and Sadie Weir. The arrival of Bill’s younger sister, Janice, four years later completed the family. Most of Bill’s childhood was spent in Concord, with a few years spent in Portsmouth during WWII. His parents moved there to work at the Shipyard and during that time Bill served as Air Raid Messenger and Warden. Upon returning to Concord, Bill was a great all round athlete playing hockey and football, becoming All State halfback for Concord High School, graduating in 1947.

Bill’s love of Newfound Lake began at an early age with his family spending summers tenting on Nutting’s Beach and later building the family camp, “Camp Weiry” near the ledges. His love of boating and waterskiing was legendary. Over the years, Bill purchased multiple properties on Newfound Lake including a barn and four cottages known as “Weir Here”, Timberloch Lodge, and Idle-A-While Country Store, creating homes for his children to grow up on the lake where they would come to love Newfound Lake as much as he did. Idle-A-While became his lakeside home for over 50 years, where he and his wife, Lucille, resided and managed a snack bar, groceries and gas pump on the beach, country store and antique shop.

Bill’s career endeavors included Merrimack Electrotype (Rumford Press) where he became an adept engraver-a lifelong skill resulting in nearly every possession being engraved with his name. He worked as Market Manager of Northern New England for Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corporation (MGIC) where he won several awards for outstanding performance, and where he developed many lifelong relationships. He also served as manager of Durgin Oil, and Tenney Mountain Ski Area. Along the way, Bill worked in real estate, served as Chief of Police in Bridgewater, President of the Rotary, and as a member of the Bridgewater Zoning Board, Men’s Club, and Board Member of Tapply Thompson Community Center. Bill was a 32nd Degree Mason, belonging to the Horace Chase Lodge for 70 years, and was a proud Shriner, having served as past president of the Winnipesaukee Shriner’s Club. Bill was especially proud to have held the designation of Justice of the Peace, having performed many marriages over the years. He remained an active Justice of the Peace until his death.

Bill will be remembered for his great love of all people and ability to establish many meaningful life-long relationships. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying traveling, hiking, skiing, hunting, camping, boating and auctions. He was always prepared, positive and happy. Mostly, Bill loved Lucille, his wife of 54 years, and his family. Throughout his lifetime he created so many memories of hiking and camping, family events and bringing people together.

Bill leaves the legacy of a lifetime of love and beautiful memories to his beloved wife Lucille, and his children, William Weir and wife Charly, Jack Weir and wife Cam, Dawn Dixon, and husband Ralph, Fran Buczynski, Jay Stickney and wife Dee, 12 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren, and his dear sister, Jan Connor and her family.

A life well lived.

A memorial service will be held at the Bristol United Church of Christ on Saturday, October 19th, at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow in the church rectory.
