Virginia Nash
Wheeler
April 7, 1932 – March 29, 2026
Moultonborough-Virginia Nash Wheeler, 93, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at her home in Moultonborough New Hampshire overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.
Born on April 7, 1932, in Flushing, New York, Virginia was the daughter of the late Donald Scott Nash and Elisabeth (Rossman) Nash. She grew up in Douglaston, NY and graduated from Wells College in Aurora, NY, class of 1953 where she studied religion, history and philosophy. Virginia and Willard met while attending neighboring colleges, Wells and Cornell, and were married for 66 years following their wedding in September 1954. Together, they raised five daughters, establishing homes in the Chicago area, Darien, CT, and Milwaukee, WI, before spending their final 37 years in Miami, FL . Throughout their journey, Virginia was a devoted mother who took pride in making family life a priority, with their second home in NH becoming the cherished, central gathering spot for their children, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and friends.
Virginia was artistic and literary, both collecting art and painting with watercolors as well as playing the piano and engaging with literature. She often shared her passion for books through lively discussions with family, friends and book clubs. She had the remarkable ability to teach herself numerous skills, including upholstering furniture, sewing, wallpapering, painting rooms in the house and tiling. Virginia valued lifelong learning, intellectual discussions and community. Above all, she had a generous spirit and a deep love for helping both people and animals. She volunteered her time to numerous organizations at every stage of her life. In her earlier years, she was a Girl Scout Leader, Board Member for the YMCA, Board Member of the Tri-State United Way and President of their Swim & Tennis Club. Virginia's leadership and volunteerism continued in Miami as a Sponsor and Board Member for the Red Cross, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and the Co-Chair of the Riviera Art Show for many years as well as various other art organizations in the Miami community. Both she and her husband Willard, were proud benefactors of Casa Familia in Miami as well.
Faith was a cornerstone of Virginia's adult life as her spiritual path while at Wells College began a journey into Christianity and the Episcopal Church. A dedicated parishioner throughout her life, Virginia held leadership roles on the Vestries and led the Altar Guilds at both St Luke's in Darien and St. Thomas in Miami, where she also managed the library and served on the school board.
Virginia is survived by her five daughters: Jinx Wheeler of Tuftonboro, New Hampshire; Gail Digby and her husband, Timothy, of Amelia Island, Florida; Kim Wheeler and her wife, Kate Burkhardt, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Cynthia Nickerson and her husband, Tom, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; and Tricia Wheeler and her husband, Ryan Stinneford, of Cumberland, Maine. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren-Nicole (Matt), Kyle (Kat), Dylan (Marissa), Jessica (Kelly), Matthew (Michelle), Stephanie (Sam), Skylar, Nash (Georgia), Julia, and Emily-and five great-grandchildren: Patrick, Noah, Henry, Rowan, and Wesley.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Willard Louis Wheeler Jr., and her sister, Patricia Dennison.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Casa Familia, Inc., c/o Suzi Main 10951 SW 84th Street Miami, Fl 33173 in the name of Virginia N Wheeler.
