Virginia Vail McDonald Hood passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, of natural causes and in her sleep at the age of 93.
Virginia Hood was born March 13, 1919 in Miraj, India the daughter of a medical missionary. She grew up in India and attended the Kodaikanal International School for missionary children. She came to the United States to attend Wellesley College graduating in 1940. She attended medical school at the University of Chicago where she was one of the first women to receive an MD degree from the college. After graduation, she married Donald McDonald, a medical school classmate, and began her training in pediatrics in Honolulu, HI just as World War II broke out. After finishing her training she joined her husband in Panama where he was working at a Naval hospital treating casualties of war. After the war she returned to the United States where she practiced pediatrics for 44 years in Seattle, Rochester, NY, Galveston, TX and Northhampton, MA. She retired at the age of 72, but continued to serve as camp doctor for Camp Runoia in Maine where she took up windsurfing. She moved to California and lived in Oakmont for several years where she met her second husband. She was married briefly to Allen Hood and after his death, moved back to New England and settled in Holderness, NH. Here she spent her days taking care of her beautiful 4 acre garden overlooking White Oak Pond. She remained sharp, engaged and energetic until the very end. She will always be remembered for her incredible energy and intellect.
