Suzanne Jane Smith

Suzanne Jane Smith, a professional homeopath and former New Hampshire State Representative, passed away in her home surrounded by loved ones on January 6, 2024.

Suzanne was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on July 19, 1948, the first child of Amelia (Judy) Smith and Edward Smith. She grew up in Westfield, New Jersey and after graduating from high school, moved to the West Coast where she worked primarily as a jeweler, creating many beautiful pieces inspired by nature.

In 1977, she moved to Stowe, Vermont, and started working at the natural food store Food For Thought, ultimately taking over ownership and transforming the small natural food store into a thriving business. In Vermont, she met her future husband, John Lloyd, and helped raise his two young daughters. Suzanne furthered her education in nutrition and homeopathy, studying at the New England School of Homeopathy, graduating from the Community College of Vermont with a degree in Holistic Health, and receiving a certificate in nutrition from the National Institute for Nutrition Education. During this time, she fostered her love of nature through kayaking, hiking, cross-country skiing and bird-watching. She also explored her theatrical side, performing in a number of productions with the Lamoille County Players.

In 2002, Suzanne and John moved to Hebron, New Hampshire. She flourished in the community of Hebron, making many close friends, and continuing her outdoor pursuits: hiking all of New Hampshire’s 4000-foot mountains, kayaking its many lakes, and joining an animal tracking group. In 2008, she was elected to the New Hampshire State House of Representatives where she served her community until 2022, taking a special interest in the Resource Committee to help shape legislation involving water quality issues, conservation, and shoreline protection. In 2022, she was recognized as the recipient of the Reverend Sidney Lovett Memorial Award for Exemplary Lake Advocacy. Suzanne never tired of giving back to her community and was particularly proud of her work on the Hebron Town Forest during her 16 years on the Hebron Conservation Commission. In the last twelve years, she also served in numerous roles with the organization Homeopaths Without Borders. Her work with the organization included editing four books and going on a service trip to Haiti.

Suzanne was a dedicated parent, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved to travel, bird-watch, laugh, dance, sing and connect with everyone who crossed her path. Suzanne was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Dr. John Lloyd. She is survived by her stepdaughters, Mika Gentili-Lloyd and Aliza Gentili-Lloyd (Carter Skemp), her brother, Stephen Smith (Patricia Wepprecht-Smith), and sister, Heidi Orpurt, as well as many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A celebration of life will be planned for the spring.
