Steven Scott Dearborn

April 26, 1951 — September 17, 2017

Steven Scott Dearborn, 66, the self-proclaimed "Mayor of Fairgrounds Road," lived in his cabin on his own five-acre lot in Plymouth for more than 30 years. He died after a brief illness at Concord Hospital on Sunday, September 17, 2017, surrounded by the love and care of his seven siblings and mother.

Born to Richard Armstrong Dearborn and Judith Jackson Dearborn on April 26, 1951, along with his sister, Gail Susan Dearborn --the first set of twins to be born at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth.

During his late elementary school years, Steve had an extensive early morning paper route delivering newspapers for the Manchester Union Leader. In high school, he worked after school, on weekends, and during vacations at Volpe's store on Main Street. With the money he earned, he bought a red T-Bird convertible from Ed Lessard. Steve recently remembered, "The girls loved it!"

Steve played basketball and football for the Bobcats at Plymouth Regional High School, and enjoyed playing pool at Hut's store in Campton. Steve was vice-president of his freshman class. After graduating from high school, Steve enlisted in the Army and served in Italy. After serving in the military, Steve followed in his father's footsteps and enrolled at Paul Smith's College in New York to study forestry and surveying.

Steve loved to work outside. He worked as a surveying assistant for Elwin Macomber, as a landscaping assistant for Plymouth State College, and as a sexton at Riverside Cemetery under Smokey Sears. He also worked at The Shank Mill in Plymouth and at a local saw mill.

Steve was a gentle soul. He was easy-going, even-tempered, and self-reliant. He would go out of his way to help someone in need. He loved the outdoors and nature, and his philosophy was to live like Henry David Thoreau: "Simplify your life. Don't waste the years struggling for the things that are unimportant."

In every way Steve embodied our NH motto, "Live Free or Die." He was a man of both humor and principle: His brothers and sisters fondly remember that Steve was good at teasing them when it was the fun thing to do, and protecting them when it was the right thing to do.

Steve is survived by his mother, Judith Jackson Dearborn of Holderness, NH; seven siblings: Ellen Judith Pack of Colfax, WA, and Holderness, NH; Janet Rosemary Dearborn of Plymouth, NH; Gail Susan Beaulieu of Plymouth, NH; Deborah Jean Jeffrey of North Woodstock, NH; Karen Jennifer Currier of Holderness, NH; Thomas Patrick Dearborn of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico; Daniel Sayre Dearborn of Boston, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Steven's life will be held at Wolfsburg Farm, 84 East Holderness Rd., Holderness, NH, from 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm Saturday, September 30, 2017. A private burial will precede the celebration at Blair Cemetery in Campton, NH.
