Sidney Lawrence Cheney, 89, born March 20, 1923 and a resident of Thornton, NH, passed peacefully at home on May 16, 2012. ?Sid? was born and raised in the Cheney family home in Campton Village. He attended Plymouth High School and Northeastern University of Boston, MA. Sid volunteered for the Enlisted Reserve Corp of the Army in December, 1942. He served in WWII with the Army Air Corps, 15th Air Force, 307th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group in the European Theater. As a P-51 pilot he flew over 51 escort, strafing and protective missions from San Severo and Mondolfo, Italy.
Sid and his late, brother Harry Winfield Cheney were the two sons born to the late Sterle and Dorothea Cheney. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Thedessa Weed Currier for over 63 years. Sid worked in the Dole and Beebe River Mills and then spent 18 years as a rural carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Campton. Sid and Teddy raised five children, Deborah Vlk of Wentworth, Charles Cheney of Campton, Sarah Caldwell of Campton, George Cheney of Thornton and Hilda Duffy of Thornton. Sid has 7 grand-children, John Vlk, Sherry Drown, Pamela Hamnett, Jason Cheney, Billy Cheney, Richard Shute and Dennis Croteau along with 11 great grand-children.
Sid loved hiking, swimming, amateur radio, Red Sox baseball, air-shows and summers at Maine camp. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League (KIPQV) and during the Vietnam War he relayed messages between soldiers and their families. He was a life member of the 31st Fighter Officers Association and the American Legion.Service:Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside, memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 20th at Blair Cemetery in Campton, NH.
