Robert E Wherland

December 30, 1929 — April 27, 2016

Robert E. Wherland died peacefully at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on April 27, 2016. His health had been on the decline in recent years due to dementia.

He was born in Plymouth, NH, on December 30, 1929, to Doris (Wilkins) and Harry Wherland. He was brought up in a loving home by his mother, Aunt Pearl Wilkins and Uncle Harold Wilkins.

He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1947, attended UNH, and then joined the family business, The Record Print (The Plymouth Record). He started at the bottom and worked his way up to owner, editor, and publisher.

Bob married Joan L. Watts on July 9, 1950. They had 65 years of loving marriage.

Over the years Bob had many interests including snowmobiling, fishing, riding his Gold Wing motorcycle, boating, and sailing with Joan in the Caribbean. His greatest passion was sailing. He spent many summers on Squam Lake and was very active in the Lightning Fleet. Many a Sunday was spent racing his boat with his wife as his crew. He had a great sense of humor and loved British comedies. He always loved a good party. Bob also always enjoyed a good game of cards, even though he rarely won. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, and UNH Wildcats football. In his declining years, he loved boat rides on his beloved Squam and going out on Lake Sunapee with his family. He loved cookies, ice cream, fireworks, "his kind" of music, and watching the ocean waves at Hampton Beach.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Joan of Georges Mills. He will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Brenda and husband David Beardsley of Georges Mills, and Cindy and husband Jamie Carpenter of Holderness. He leaves six grandchildren - Nylah Lyman (Kevin), Matthew Moran (Heather), Brianne Carpenter (Nate), Peter Beardsley (Ann), Todd Beardsley (Beth), and Jamie Tillotson. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marion Wright, a niece and two nephews, and his life-long friend John Millar of Laconia.

Bob spent his last year at Sunapee Cove Assisted Living in Georges Mills. The family is very grateful to all of the staff there for their wonderful care and many acts of kindness.

Per his wishes there will be no calling hours. There will be a private graveside service at the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Plymouth at a later date.
