Robert Alan "Nick" Nichols, 61, of Meredith, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at home with his family by his side after a year and a half long battle with cancer.

Born in Burbank, CA, on April 1, 1951, he was the son of James E. and M. Hazel (Lightfoot) Nichols. He was raised in West Covina, CA, attending local schools and joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school. After Nick was discharged from the Air Force he relocated to Laconia, NH where he resided before moving to Meredith in 1996.

Nick was an avid history and war "buff", he also enjoyed watching movies (especially those that were documentaries about history and war chronicles), and he loved "Classic Rock" music. He was a private man who was proud of his service to his country and was also proud of the Meredith Police Department, where he worked the past 22 years as an Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police.

Nick is survived by his wife, Alice Ann (Marando) Nichols, of Meredith; five step-sons, Jerry W. Harper, Jr. and wife Andrea, William T. Harper and wife Nicole, Michael J. Harper and wife Michele, all of Meredith, Peter J. Harper and wife Jill, of Brewer, ME, and Dustin G. Harper and fiancé Melanie, of Moultonborough; a sister, Katherine (Nichols) Rasco, of Los Angeles, CA; eighteen grandchildren, Nicole, Kayla, Josh, Brendan, Paige, Billie, Timothy, Jared, Chase, James, Riley, Lauralei, Addison, Payton, Alex, Lydia, Evan, Anna; two nephews and one niece; and many friends throughout the many departments of the Town of Meredith.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nick's memory may be made to the NH Veterans Cemetery.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Chapel located at the NH Veterans Cemetery, 110 D.W. Hwy, Boscawen. The Rev. Sharron Lamothe, pastor of the United Baptist Church, of Lakeport, will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the NH Veterans Cemetery.
