Robert J. Malonson, 82, of Thornton, NH, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 6, 2012, at Golden View Health Care Center, in Meredith, after a period of declining health. He was a resident of Thornton, NH for 32 years.
Born on September 10, 1929, in his parents? home in Wakefield, MA, he was the son of the late Frederick H. and Gertrude (Glennon) Malonson. Robert attended Wakefield Public Schools, and joined the MA State Guards, and then enlisted into the Merchant Marines in 1945, making three trips to France, Belgium, and Germany. In August 1948 Robert enlisted with the U.S. Army. After he completed basic training at Fort Brag, S.C., he served in the Occupation of Japan. A veteran of the Korean War, Robert landed with the 25th Division, 27th Wolfhound Regiment, on July 12, 1950, and fought with valor and courage in five major battles: Pork Chop Hill, Seoul, Yong Dung Po, Yongdok, and Taegu. For his service, he received several awards and medals for his bravery, including: four Bronze Stars, and one Silver Star. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on May 9, 1952; he then went on to join the National Guard for three years.
After Robert?s military service, he joined the Wakefield, MA police department. He attended an FBI Firearms instructor course at Camp Curtis, in Reading, MA, and also the Smith & Wesson Gunsmith School, in Springfield, MA. After the completion of these courses, he moved into the Armorer position at the police department.
After 20 years of service to his community on the Wakefield Police Department, Robert retired in 1980, moving to NH with his wife Judy. While living in NH, Robert was an Honor Guard and Sr. Vice Commander at the VFW Post 4483, and was also a member of the American Legion Post 66, both Posts? in Plymouth, NH.
Both Robert and his wife Judy enjoyed many outdoor activities together, including hunting, fishing, and camping.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Judith (Marshall) Malonson, of Thornton; three sons, Frederick Malonson and wife Nancy, of Wakefield, MA, Robert Malonson and wife Linda, of Saugus, MA, and Kenneth Malonson, also of Wakefield; six grandchildren, Lori, Michelle, Melissa, Jennifer, Jesse (Malonson),and Melissa DePalma; five great-grandchildren, Shaun, Dante, Hawthorne, Drew, and Logan; a sister, Rose Woods, of Wakefield; two stepsons, Robert and David Richardson; four stepdaughters, Judy, Joni, Bonnie, and Sharon; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.Memorials:In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert?s memory to the VFW Post 4483, Plymouth, NH, c/o Linden King, PO Box 108, Campton, NH 03223.Service:A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012, at the NH Veterans Cemetery, in Boscawen, NH at 11:00 am.Cemetery:NH Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH 03303
