Raymond S. Keniston, Sr., 92, of Rumney, passed away at Speare Memorial Hospital, in Plymouth, on Wednesday, June 18, 2014.
A lifelong resident of Rumney, Raymond was born on November 22, 1921 to George L. and Bertha (Watts) Keniston.
He began his logging career at age 16 with his first truck. Later, he operated his sawmill in Rumney, starting with a steam engine, his life-long dream. He was a member of the Odd Fellows. Raymond enjoyed planting trees for the Rumney Common, Library, and family. His retirement hobby making wooden spoons was a gift enjoyed by many.
His many years spent at the sawmill taught him the value of efficiency and organization. With an eighth grade education, he did all of the bookkeeping at home after work.
As an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing, taking two trips to Alaska for salmon fishing. He also loved time spent at his camps in Pittsburg and New Brunswick.
Raymond was a generous, humble, and intelligent man, a teacher at heart. He was always asking questions and looking for a better way to do things.
Raymond was preceded in death by his newborn son, George.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Ila (Bixby) Keniston, who tirelessly cared for him for 74 years. He will be missed by his three daughters, Nancy and her companion Harold Avery, Sally and her companion Ron Linke, Kelly and her husband Len Anderson; son, Raymond S. Keniston, Jr.; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and his 100 year old cousin, Phyllis Pray.
In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Raymond's memory. Donations may be made to Speare Memorial Hospital in gratitude for their loving care given to Raymond and his family during his illness.
