Pierre "Pete" Bernardin Gauthier, 82, of New Hebron Road, Plymouth, died suddenly on March 22, 2016, at Speare Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pawtucket, RI on August 24, 1933, he was the son of Pierre E. Gauthier and Cora L. Gauthier.
Pete grew up in the Pawtucket area and graduated from Our Lady of Consolation Grammar School, and St. Raphael Academy, both in Pawtucket. He went on to earned a BS in Biology in 1959 at Providence College in Providence, RI., earned his MS in Physiology in 1961 at St. John's University, in Jamaica, NY. and earned his Ph. D in Biochemistry in 1968 at Connecticut University, in Storrs, CT. As a student, he spent his free time fishing, flying small planes, and playing tennis and chess.
Pete moved to Emmitsburg, MD in 1968 to join the Biology Department at Mount Saint Mary's University, where he taught biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, and immunology for over 30 years. His students found his courses challenging and an excellent preparation for careers in science and medicine. Pete married Eileen A. Wilkinson in 1968 in Frederick, MD. After retiring from teaching in 2002, he moved to Plymouth, NH.
Pete published several scientific papers, with a particular interest in the origins of the first biotic structures. He was a published author of short stories, focusing on nature and kindness to animals.
Pete joined the Air Force in 1951, served in Germany as a radio operator, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
As a boy, he often went freshwater and saltwater fishing with his friends and family, a hobby he continued to enjoy during his retirement, along with gardening, hiking with his wife and family, Pete was a self-taught musician who played jazz and ragtime on the harmonica, piano, and recorder.
Pete was predeceased by his brother, Paul E. Gauthier.
Pete is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Plymouth, NH, his son Christopher, of Nashua, NH, his daughter Deanna Parks, his son-in-law Matthew Parks, his granddaughter Kyra and grandson Jacob of Merrill, OR, his nephew John, of Providence, RI, and his niece Joanna.
