Phyllis Coombs Sutherland, 86, formerly of Plymouth, died July 24, 2009 at the Presedential Oaks, in Concord, NH, after a short illness with her family by her side.Phyllis was born in Greenfield, MA, on July 1st, 1923, and was raised on the Coombs Hill Dairy Farm, in Colrain, MA; she graduated from the Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. A Veteran of WWII, she served as a Pharmacist's Mate in the USNR at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C., before marrying Kenneth I. Sutherland, Sr., in 1946. Phyllis moved to Plymouth in 1956, where Ken served as Ranger for the Pemigewasset District of the White Mountain National Forest, he predecased her in 1991.Together they raised three sons, Kenneth, Jr., who died in 2007, Keith, of Rumney, NH, and Richard, of Campton, NH.After raising her three sons, she began a career as an X-Ray technician at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. She served on the Plymouth School Board, and was an active member of the Plymouth Community. Phyllis was known for her love of gardening and many unusual pets (monkey, skunk, crow, parrots, a tailess squirrel, wheasel, pheasants, and rabbits).In addition to her sons Keith and Rick, Phyllis is survived by her six granddaughters, Molly, Jill, Annie, Lilly, Lyndsey, and Erika; two great-granddaughters, Elliot and Ella.
