Michael Leonard
Schnell
March 1, 1955 – April 1, 2026
Michael Schnell, a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 2, 2026, after experiencing a diabetic episode. Born on March 1, 1955 in Schenectady, New York, Michael's life was filled with love, laughter, and an unyielding dedication to his family and friends.
Michael was the beloved son of Lorraine Schnell and the late Commander Herbert Schnell, US Navy. The "brat" (Michael's word) of a military father, Michael spent his early years living both in the US and abroad. Michael and his sister, Linda, enjoyed countless adventures living and learning in many foreign locales. After graduating from high school in Belgium, Michael attended Hillsdale College in Michigan, where he met and fell in love with his soul-mate and wife of 48 years, Kerry McCann. They were married on June 24, 1978, and together they embarked on a life-long journey through Arizona, Colorado and New Hampshire, raising their two children and building a life filled with love and adventure.
Michael shared a deep and unwavering bond with his mother, Lorraine, who survives him. He recently visited her in Arizona where together they enjoyed golf, cards, nachos and happy memories. Michael is also remembered by his loving children, Matthew Schnell and Amanda Schnell, and his adored grandson, Daveon, who brought him immense pride and happiness for the last six years. Though he was known for his strong work ethic and the way he left everything better than he found it, to his daughter, Amanda, he was so much more-her constant, her support, and her biggest fan. He was there for every moment of her life, never missing a game, an event, or an opportunity to show up. To his son, Matthew, his dad spent countless hours on the slopes and courts teaching and coaching and supporting him. Michael's voice was always the loudest cheering proudly at his kids' games and meets. His love was quiet but unwavering, shown through daily check-ins, thoughtful gestures, and a memory that held onto everything that mattered to them.
Michael's family, along with his cherished cats, Oscar and Felix, were his world, and he loved every moment spent with them. Michael also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bob Whitson, as well as his sisters-in-law, Jane DiPietro and Cathyann Ray, and brothers-in-law, Michael DiPietro, Matthew Ray, and Bradley McCann. He was also a dear son-in-law to the late Carl, Ann and Joyce McCann, and uncle of Callie, Maddy and Jack Ray, and Mary DiPietro. Each of these relationships was precious to him, and he valued the time spent with his extended family.
Michael's career eventually took him and his family to Lincoln, New Hampshire, where he found his calling in the hospitality industry, particularly within the ski and golf sectors. His work was not simply a profession; it was an extension of his passion for sports and the outdoors. Michael was an enthusiastic ski and basketball coach to Matthew and Amanda, and was a natural teacher, always ready to share his skills to help others improve their game. Maine was a favorite vacation spot where he enjoyed hiking, skiing, kayaking and spending time with family and friends. He kept in shape by walking miles every day in rain, snow or 100 degree heat, and especially loved to do his walking on the links, as he was an expert golfer who celebrated the proud achievement of qualifying as a PGA golf professional.
Michael was a passionate music lover and enjoyed playing the guitar, performing for friends at college and après-ski venues. He and Kerry were consummate Steely Dan fans, and they had many occasions to sing-along at Dan concerts over the years. An avid sports fan, he cheered heartily for the Red Sox, Broncos and Celtics, sharing his enthusiasm for the games with those he loved.
Michael's personal characteristics shone brightly in his everyday actions. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially in the kitchen, where his magical touch would transform a post-dinner mess into a spotless haven. Fondly nicknamed the "King of Postcards," Michael delighted in sending greetings from his travels, a testament to his thoughtful and caring nature. He and Kerry honed their jig-saw puzzle prowess during the pandemic, and continued to enjoy long and leisurely times at their kitchen table creating intricate pieces of art. The backgammon board also often came out on that same kitchen table for rousing and boisterous competitions.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held on April 14, 2026, from 1 to 4 at Woodstock Station, located at 135 Main Street, No. Woodstock, NH. Michael and Kerry have been blessed with an amazing circle of friends, and all are invited to join in sharing stories and memories of a man who touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Michael's favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and the family encourages everyone to live life as Michael did: with love, laughter, and a generous spirit.
His legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him, and his absence is profoundly felt by all.
