Maurice Huckins, Jr., M.D. died peacefully Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Havenwood Retirement Community in Concord, NH, surrounded by his loving family.
Dr. Huckins was born November 25, 1918 in Aberdeen, Mississippi to Maurice and Mary Louise Hudson Huckins, He soon moved to Sasakwa, Oklahoma where he grew up. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Oklahoma University School of Medicine in 1943. He did his Internship at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital Detroit, Michigan in 1944 and from 1948 to 1953 completed Residency and Surgical Residencies at Lowell General Hospital (MA) and the Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals, Boston. Huckins served in the US Army Medical Corps from 1944-1946. In 1950 he joined the Medical Associates of Lowell and Chelmsford (MA) and was on staff at the Lowell General Hospital until his retirement in 1981. During this time Dr. Huckins and his family lived in Westford MA where he served on the Westford School Board and the Westford Academy Board of Trustees and was active in the First Parish Church United of Westford.
Upon retirement, Maurice and Claudine Huckins moved to Hebron, NH. Dr. Huckins participated in water quality monitoring of Newfound Lake. He also enjoyed pool, fishing, woodworking and gardening. They joined the Havenwood Retirement Community in Concord, NH in 2005.
Dr. Huckins is survived by Claudine E. Huckins, his wife of nearly 71 years, daughters Ann and her husband John J.L. Matson of Westborough MA, Mary Nell Allen of Hebron NH, and Beth and her husband Douglas L. Robertson, Jr. of Warren NH; grandchildren Scott L. Matson and wife Jennifer of Everett MA, Sarah M. Gay and husband Matthew of Mansfield MA, William Huckins Allen of Bangalore, India, James M. Allen of Meridian MS, Lee R. Allen and wife Heather of Chesapeake VA, Benjamin B. Allen and wife Brooke of Macomb MI, Emily R. Miller and husband John Thomas of Washington DC, Gregory D. Robertson and wife Nicole of Houston TX; great-grandchildren Grace and Garrett Gay, Porter Rodgers, Ainsley Allen, Paige Allen, Charlie and Henry Miller and Kade Robertson. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Patricia Huckins of Jamesville NY and Ruth Leake of River Falls WI, brother-in-law John Henry Etter and wife Kitty of Lusby MD and by several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Huckins was predeceased by his parents, brother Robert M. Huckins and son-in-law Robert L. Allen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the NH Association for the Blind, 25 Walker St., Concord NH 03301 or the Newfound Lake Region Association, 10 N. Main St., Unit 1, Bristol, NH 03222.
A private burial will be held at the Hebron Cemetery at the family's convenience.
