Martin Joseph Riehs

October 9, 1930 — January 23, 2015

Martin J. Riehs, Jr. 84, of Campton died January 23, 2015 peacefully at home with family by his side.

Martin was born in Weehawken, NJ on October 9, 1930. He was the son of Martin J Riehs and Lydia Gutjahr
Riehs. He grew up in West New York, NJ where he met his bride, Anne. They settled in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ and started a family there. He managed the family business, the Martin J. Riehs Paper Company, for 22 years, and was active in the First Reformed Church, serving as a deacon, elder, and Superintendent of Sunday School.

In 1970 the family relocated to Holderness, NH where he and his wife became proprietors of the Olde Colonial Eagle Motel and the Sailing Center for 26 years. He served as the chairman on the inaugural Zoning Board of Adjustment and was a founder of the Squam Lakes Board of Trade, which later became the Squam Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

Marty was an avid skier, fisherman, and enjoyed sailing. In 1992 he captained his Lightning, "Loon-A-Sea", with his son and daughter-in-law to capture the Championship of Squam Lake Fleet 332 . He shared many beautiful sunsets with his wife, children and grandchildren from the helm of his Cape Dory on Casco Bay, in Maine. Marty was passionate about fishing-whether in sub-freezing temps in his bob house on Squam, or in the mangroves of the Florida keys. Memories were made while snowmobiling through Sandwich Notch and hiking to Tuckerman Ravine to ski the Sherburne trail. He skied with his children, grandchildren and great grandson over six decades. His love of nature and the outdoors was instilled in all of his family members.

Marty and Anne retired to Campton NH, where he maintained a small fruit orchard, large vegetable garden, and prolific blueberry patch. His home was the gathering place for family and friends to celebrate all of life's occasions.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne (Pakan) Riehs, children Suzanne Riehs-Moore and husband David Moore of Holderness, Marion Doyle and husband Glenn McIntire of Freeport, Maine; Marty Riehs III and wife Shelagh Connelly of Holderness. Grandchildren include Sam Smith, Saralyn Uhlman and her husband Mike Uhlman, Haleigh Doyle, Casey Doyle, Molly Riehs, Liam Riehs, Liza Riehs, and Nathan Moore. Great grandchildren are Trevor Hughes, Anika and Graeme Uhlman. Niece Beth Bernhardt and her husband Paul Puzzanghera and their children Kate, Hope and Saramarie all of Winchester, MA.
