Lila Maureen Sharkey

October 24, 1945 — August 24, 2024

MOULTONBOROUGH --- Lila Sharkey, cherished wife and mother of three, passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of 78. A lifelong creative and avid gardener, Lila made Moultonborough, NH her home for the past 25 years. During these years, she worked at the League of NH Craftsmen and Yikes and won numerous local and national awards for her picture quilts. Lila was best known for her deep appreciation for art and beauty, steadfast determination, playful humor, and unconditional love.

Passionate about fashion and decorating, Lila graduated from Moore College of Art with a BFA in illustration and advertising design and pursued a MA in arts education at Hofstra. She went on to become a CT public school art teacher and later started a sought after wallpaper installation business, cleverly named Hang Ups. Among her greatest joys were raising her three children (Scott, Heather, and Greg) and spoiling her eight grandchildren.

She married the love of her life, Bill Sharkey, in 1987. Many memorable family vacations were spent sailing Long Island Sound and visiting Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, always with the kids, the family dog, and everyone’s bicycles in tow. Lila and Bill were thrilled to eventually move to their dream home on Lake Winnipesaukee, where they kept a sailboat and enjoyed canoeing and watching the wildlife, especially the loons. Her sister, Caroline Dueger, long owned a home across the bay and was just a short paddle away.

When she wasn’t caring for family, she tended to her garden and beloved pets. Lila was a member of two Lakes Region garden clubs and for years grew her own plants from seed, awing us all with her bountiful and exquisite raised beds and flower boxes. She kept a bird box at the ready in case there was an injured animal in need and found great joy in caring for her many fur-babies over the years.

The family will celebrate Lila’s life in a small, private gathering.
