Leslie S. Downing, 78 of Moultonborough, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015 with his loving wife by his side after a brave battle with cancer at Lakes Region General Hospital.
He was born on April 11, 1937, in Littleton, NH, the son of Richard and Ruth (Wright) Downing. Leslie was raised in Thornton and attended local schools. After graduating high school he enlisted with the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Throughout his working career Leslie has held various positions as a heavy equipment operator and a machinist.
He enjoyed the simple things in life, loved to fish, follow NASCAR, and spend time doing yard-work and home projects. Leslie will be lovingly remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a beloved uncle. He will be dearly missed.
Leslie is predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Downing, in 2005; two granddaughters, Mallory and Elizabeth Downing, and his sister, Beverly Hanson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sylvia (Hammel) Downing, of Moultonborough; two children, Randy Downing and his wife Terry, of Bethlehem, PA, Bobette Haley and her husband Royce, of Burlington, NC; six grandchildren, Erin and Maeghan Woodward, Nicole, Randy, and Katie Downing, and Alexandra Corrick; he is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, and his surrogate daughter and long-time close family friend, Catherine Gunter, of Concord, NH.
