ROCHESTER---Justin MacDougall, 49, of Rochester passed away surrounded by his family on November 9, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Justin was born on March 26, 1975, in Quincy, MA to Jay and Patricia MacDougall.
In a word, Justin was an artist. He was a gifted sketch-artist and painter, as well as an exceptionally talented, self-taught guitarist, drummer, and pianist. Perhaps most of all, Justin was an eclectic literarian with an insatiable penchant for reading across all genres, all literary periods, and even across languages. His expansive literary reconnaissance helped enflame his passion for writing poetry, short stories, and plays, including a poem published in the Northern New England Review. In the several years prior to getting sick, Justin went public with his many talents, performing in numerous productions at the Player’s Ring, Hackmatack Playhouse, and the Rochester Opera House. Beyond his thespian skills, Justin will be forever remembered for his selfless service and giving of himself to others, his compassion, his empathy, his witty sense of humor, and his prodigious vocabulary.
Justin is survived by his son, Jem MacDougall (Eliot, ME), parents, Jay and Patricia MacDougall (Rochester, NH), brother, Jay MacDougall (Rochester, NH), brother, Adam MacDougall (Pittsburgh, PA), brother, Todd MacDougall and his wife, Amy MacDougall (Milton, NH), and brother, Ryan MacDougall and his wife, Sarah MacDougall (Somersworth, NH), and six nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hackmatack Playhouse (538 School Street, Berwick, ME 03901), Rochester Opera House (31 Wakefield St., Rochester, NH 03867) or Player’s Ring Theatre (105 Mercy Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801).
The Celebration of Life is scheduled for December 28, 2024, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Tri-City Covenant Church, 150 West High Street, Somersworth, NH. This will be a very casual event for friends and family to remember and commemorate the impact Justin’s life had on us all. Light refreshments will be served.
