Joseph Leo Long, 93, of Old Route #25, died June 23, 2015 at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH, after a period of declining health.
Born in Berlin, NH, on January 25, 1922, he was the son of Raymond and Delia (Valade) Long.
Joe grew up in Gorham, NH and graduated from Gorham High School, class of 1940. Joe has been a resident of the Plymouth and Holderness area since the mid 1940's.
Joe was a World War II US Army Air Force veteran and had served proudly in the South Pacific. While in the service, he became friends with another New Hampshire native, Kip Hawkins, and they formed relationship that would last a life time.
In the mid forties, Joe went to work with Kip at his service station, in Plymouth and then he worked for the Town of Holderness for a several years. Joe was instrumental in the installation of many of the roadways in the town. He and Kip installed the rope tow for the former Holderness Ski Club, which was located on Route 175, and he served the town in many ways. He was also a member of the Holderness Volunteer Fire Department
Joe co-owned and operated Kip and Joe's Volkswagen Dealership, the first Volkswagen dealership in the state of New Hampshire, which was moved to Gilford, NH in 1961. He and Kip opened the Lakes Region Toyota and Saab Dealership in Holderness in the mid 1960's, which moved to Glendale, NH in the 1970's. Joe and Kip also started a marina on Little Squam Lake, in Holderness, which became Kimball Marine and now is Asquam Marina, in Holderness. Joe then owned and operated the Bristol NAPA Store, in Bristol, NH, for many years, retiring at the age of eighty.
Joe was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Emma Marie (Towne) Long, who died in August of 2013.
Joe is survived by his son, Michael J. Long of Plymouth, daughters, Joan M. Potter and her husband Robert and Janet M. Lenentine, both of Holderness, four grandchildren, 2 great grandsons, several nieces and nephews.
