John Walter Thompson, Sr., 91, of Campton, passed away at his home on Friday, November 16, 2012 with family by his side.

Born on December 7, 1920, in Plymouth, he was the son of John W. and Christine (Page) Thompson. John was raised in Plymouth attending local schools. John served his country with honor and valor in the Army during WWII from 1943-1945 receiving decorations for his heroic service.

In his life John's childhood was spent bob-sledding down Texas Hill road, kite flying, and repairing bicycles during the depression era. As a young man, John would walk to Waterville Valley from the Campton dam with his skis over his shoulder. He would hike up Mount Tecumseh and had enough daylight to complete two ski runs before walking home after dark. John was a lifelong hunter and sports enthusiast.

John's careers included: golf caddy, dry cleaning delivery man, tailor, soldier, painter, electrician, and he spent 23 years in Quality Control for the Draper Corporation and Rockwell International. He finished his working career as the Production Control Manager in charge of sawmill and rough mill operations in Beebe River.

On June 4th, 1946, John married Margaret Ahern at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Plymouth, NH. They were married for 62 years and had four children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Their commitment and fidelity to each other were inspiring. John and Margaret spent their life together in Campton and were devoted to their community. John was a member of the Planning Board and was one of the first town Water Commissioners in Campton.

John spent his retirement years gardening, making maple syrup, and maintaining the homestead, highlighted by the occasional round of golf. He passed away on November 16th surrounded by his children and grandchildren at his home in Campton.

He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret E. (Ahern) Thompson, in 2008; a son, John W. Thompson, Jr., and a daughter, Diane Marie Thompson.

John is survived by his daughter, Gail Sanborn and husband Douglas, of Rumney, and son Christopher Andrew Thompson and wife Shelley, of Campton; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
