John Conrad Thomas passed away peacefully on July 21st, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, architect, mentor, and friend.

Born and raised in Chicago, John was the eldest of four children. As a young man, he worked as a lifeguard before serving in the United States Coast Guard. He later studied architecture, beginning a career that would span more than 45 years and establish him as a highly respected industrial architect.

John spent his professional career with Ware Malcomb, as Senior Fellow of Creative Design. He helped shape the firm's design philosophy, mentored generations of architects and designers, and led projects around the world. For nearly twenty years, he was the design partner behind Nongfu Spring's industrial campuses throughout China, work recently featured in the book Where Industry Meets Nature.

John believed architecture should respond to its surroundings rather than dominate them. His work sought to unite industry with the natural landscape, creating buildings that reflected both their purpose and the character of the places in which they stood. He understood both the technical and artistic sides of design, approaching every project with curiosity, practicality, and craftsmanship. His appreciation and love for creativity extended equally to music, painting, theatre, and sculpture.

Those who knew John will remember his generosity with his time and knowledge. He was an attentive listener and thoughtful mentor, always willing to share ideas and encouragement. He enjoyed family and friends, long walks, playing guitar, and, with a twinkle in his eye, offering occasional unsolicited opinions about the homes and buildings around him. His quiet humor, practical nature, and genuine interest in people made him such easy company wherever he went.

John is survived by his wife, Jana; his daughter, Cristi; his stepdaughters, Krista, Gaela, and Spring; his grandchildren; and, most recently, his great-grandchild. Ours is a blended family, and John embraced all of us with generosity and commitment, demonstrating how family is built through love, loyalty, and shared life.

John leaves an enduring legacy in the buildings he designed, those he mentored, and the family and friends who loved him. He will be greatly missed.
