John C. Taffner, Jr., 89, of Thornton, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton, after a lengthy illness.
Born in New York City, NY, on February 18, 1924, he was the son of John C. and Minnie Taffner, Sr. John was raised in the New York City area. After graduating high school he joined the United States Army and fought with honor in World War II in the European Theatre.
John worked for many years with the Holiday Inn Corporation. After his retirement in 1988 he joined the Plymouth Police Department and served as the Parking Enforcement Officer.
John was a Master Mason as well as a patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, he was a past State President of the Vermont Elks Assoc., and a dedicated school board member of the Thornton Central School for many years. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be missed dearly by his beloved family.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor Jean (Edwards) Taffner, in 2008; a daughter, Kim T. Strout, in 2012, and son, John C. Taffner, III.
John is survived by his loving daughter, Beth A. Matthew and husband Alan, of Thornton; five grandchildren, Danielle Pike and husband Erick, of Alexandria, Sara Matthew, of Thornton, Andrea Bachelder and husband Tom, of Buckfield, ME, Stephanie Strout, of Lewiston, ME, and Elizabeth Strout and fiancé Ryan, of Bangor, ME; four great-grandchildren, Gracie, Khloe, Thomas, and Kylie.
