John W. Laverack, Sr., of Center Sandwich, died on April 7, 2010 at the age of 95. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. to William H. and Elizabeth (Woodward) Laverack. The family moved to Brookline, Massachusetts where he attended the Dexter School. He then graduated from the Solebury School and did a post-graduate year at Rivers Country Day School. A graduate of Harvard College in 1937, John was a member of the Fox Club. He was also among the first members of the Schussverein Ski Club. During World War II, after several years with the American Field Service in the Middle East, he accepted a position with the U.S. Dept. of State in Cairo. John was called home upon the death of his father to run the family business, the Dampney Co. He wed Janet Sabine and they moved to Sherborn, Massachusetts where they raised their family. He was active in town affairs, and he enjoyed golf and curling at the The Country Club in Brookline. Upon retirement in 1971, they moved to Center Sandwich, NH. There John played golf and tennis, enjoyed Squam Lake, and served as president of the Squam Lakes Association.After losing his wife Janet in 2001, he grew to be a wonderful storyteller and role model as he presided over many family gatherings, the likes of which will be sorely missed by his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet (Sabine) Laverack, his brother William, and sister Mary Chamberlin. He leaves his children John W. (Woodie) Laverack, Jr. and Susan of Holderness, NH, Anne Laverack Gallivan and Tom of Chittenden, VT, and Samuel Lawrence Laverack and Barb of Holderness, NH and eight grandchildren.Memorials:Memorial donations may be made to: The Squam Lakes Association - Youth Activity Barn - PO Box 204, Holderness, NH 03245 Service:A private service will be held at a later date.
