James Asa Rushton

November 17, 1934 — December 31, 2017

James "Jim" Asa Rushton, 83, of Meredith went home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2017 with his family surrounding him after a period of declining health. Jim was born on November 17, 1934 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada to Asa Bradley and Martha Marie (Main) Rushton.

At the age of 21, Jim was recruited by the Bartlett Tree Company to come to New Hampshire to remove trees for the power company. He along with 4 other men lived at VanDyne's Boarding House in Meredith. It was there in Meredith that he met his wife of 58 years Marilyn (Pickering) Rushton. For the rest of his life, Jim lived, worked, and raised his family in Meredith.

He worked until his official retirement for the local lumber yard under its many owners: Prescott Lumber, Gerrity, and Middleton. Never one to be idle, Jim could be seen working and serving at his local church, getting mail for the Meredith Fire Department and ladies at the public library, and in his later life, he also worked with his son-in-law at the Meredith Center Store.

Jim's greatest pride was serving as a volunteer fireman for the Meredith Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years.

Jim was a simple, quiet man who loved the Lord and his family deeply. He was a hard-worker who never complained about anything. He was grateful for all of life's simple pleasures and his family will miss his quiet chuckles and his quick wit.

Surviving family members include his wife Marilyn of Meredith; his son Bradley Rushton and his wife Patricia of Meredith; his daughter Diana Ladd and her husband Barry of Meredith; grandson Stephen Rushton, his wife Caitlin, and their children Aubrey and Bennett of Laconia; granddaughter Kimberly Taggett, her husband Charles, and their children Bailey and Adalyn of Laconia; and grandson Craig Ladd of Concord. He is also survived by a brother, Elmer Rushton of Alberta, Canada.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Jan. 6th, at Mayhew Funeral Home, Route 3 and 104, Meredith, from 10am to12pm. A Funeral Service will follow at 12pm. The Rev. Michael Rattin, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church, in Hollis and former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Meredith, will officiate. Spring Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Meredith Center, on Friday, May 18th, at 10am.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wamesit Engine Company, PO Box 494, Meredith, NH. 03253
