Harold Carl "Hal" Long, Sr., 91, of Plymouth, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.
 
 
 Born on September 20, 1923, in Amherst, NH, he was the son of the late Edward and Dorothy Bell (Tower) Long. Hal was raised in Amherst, attending local schools. At the age of 17, before graduating high school, Hal took up the call to arms and joined the U.S. Navy to fight for his country in World War II.
 
 
 He was assigned to the U.S.S. Texas and fought valiantly in the Pacific and European Theatres. Hal witnessed the Normandy Invasion, and was stationed at Iwo Jima, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Hal's brothers also fought in the war, he lost his older brother Frank, U.S. Marine Corps., in battle, and his twin brother Howard, U.S. Army, was badly wounded.
 
 
 Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Hal returned to the States and began his working career with the Hood Milk Co., in Boston where he worked for several years. He later became a local professional Interior Decorator and Painter, operating his own business until his retirement.
 
 
 Hal was an avid fly fisherman, he loved the outdoors, and he loved traveling throughout the U.S. with his wife Pat. Together he and Pat loved to dine out at the Country Cow and Annie's Overflow where they were well known as regulars.
 
 
 Hal will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he was a good friend to many. He was a great mentor to his children, always trying to instill good values.
 
 
 He was a member of the Olive Branch Masonic Lodge No. 16, in Holderness and a Bektash Shriner.
 
 
 Hal is predeceased by his son, Harold C. Long, Jr.; brothers, Frank Long and Clare Long; and sisters, Shirley, Muriel, and Pauline.
 
 
 He is survived by his beloved wife of 11 years, Patricia R. (Blanchard) Long, of Plymouth; grandchildren, Bobette Leeman and husband Lloyd, of Gorham, NH, Toby Long and wife Michelle, of Winterspring, FL, Denise Long Lugar and husband Mark, of Thornton; great-grandchildren, Tianna Godin, of Gorham, NH, Courtney Boynton, of Ft. Sill, TX, Brittany Fenza Long, of TX; his twin brother, Howard E. Long, of Sarasota, FL; sisters, Helen Randall and Janice Brown, both of Amherst, NH. Hal is also survived by numerous step-children, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
 
 
 In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02214, the American Heart Association, or to a charity of one's choice.
