Gary C. Hatton

May 16, 1956 — November 28, 2021

HATTON, Gary C. of Beacon Hill passed away unexpectedly on Sunday November 28, 2021, at his home in Holderness, NH. He was 65. Gary was the beloved husband of Jill Sommer Hatton, his devoted wife of 38 years, and the loving father of his four children and their spouses: Jenny Hatton, Garrett Hatton and wife Sarah, Nicky Hatton Nickerson and husband Andrew, and Jim Hatton. He was also a loving grandfather to his three grandchildren: Avery, Brady, and Grace Hatton. He had a special love and appreciation for Nonie O'Donovan, a crucial part of our family since 1985. Gary loved his family with all his heart.

Gary was the son of Paul and Ann Hatton, and the brother of Paul, Craig, and Rebecca Hatton. He was raised in Belmont, MA, and graduated from Belmont High School in 1974. In 1978, he graduated from the University of Rhode Island and later attended Business School at the University of Wisconsin -Madison, where he met the love of his life, Jill Sommer. He graduated from Wisconsin with an MS in Finance in 1982 and was a lifelong fan of the Badgers. Jill and Gary were married in 1983 and moved back to Boston.

In 1985, Gary co-founded Granahan Investment Management, a small-cap equity investment firm, along with business partners Jack Granahan and Jane White. Gary specialized in the medical and biotechnology sectors, and he poured his heart and soul into his work. He held the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and was a member of the CFA Institute. He worked alongside his partners at Granahan for 36 years and took a great amount of pride in his investment career.

Gary's passion in life was his family. He loved his four children and his wife with all his heart, and in recent years he got so much joy from being a grandpa to his three grandchildren. Gary loved spending his free time with family and friends, especially at his home on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH. He loved summer days out on the boat and winter days out on the ice. He spent countless nights laughing with family and friends next to a fire. He had a special love for his neighbors at Squam and his close friends, Mike and Cindy O'Leary and their family. When he was in Boston, Gary loved cheering on the Bruins from Section 6 at the TD Garden. In his younger years, he had a passion for running and completed the Boston Marathon 11 times. He had a sarcastic sense of humor, an infectious smile, and he will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

Gary is survived by his wife, his children, his grandchildren, our beloved Nonie, his brothers Paul (Pam) and Craig (Deb), his sister Rebecca, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Ann and Paul Hatton. A funeral mass to celebrate Gary's life will be held on Saturday December 11, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11:00am at 68 William Cardinal O'Connell Way, Boston, MA 02114. In accordance with current City of Boston regulations, masks are mandatory.
