Elsie Leona (Hersey) Bassett, 94, of W. Rumney, NH, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Laconia Genesis Center, in Laconia.
Born on April 5, 1917 on the Hersey Farm, in East Andover, NH she was the daughter of Guy Eastman and Nannie Maud (Robie) Hersey. Elsie graduated from Franklin High School in 1936, and the University of NH, in 1944 with a bachelor?s degree. She married her beloved husband, John E. Bassett, of Danbury on April 15, 1944.
During high school Elsie worked for the Log Cabin Association at Webster Lake, W. Franklin; she also worked summers during college at the Danbury Inn Dude Ranch, in Danbury. She worked as a secretary for the IRS, Portsmouth, NH; and was a homemaker for many years before she became a private housekeeper.
Elsie enjoyed a wide range of activities and hobbies including: reading, knitting, growing African Violets, letter writing, walking, baking breads and desserts. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center. One of the highlights of her life was being an extra in the movie ?The Whistle at Eaton Falls?, filmed partially in Portsmouth, NH.
Elsie is predeceased by her beloved husband John in 1974; siblings, Dorothy LaPlante, Samuel, James, and Louis Hersey; stepchildren, Marion Cushing, Wesley Bassett, and Russell Bassett-Stanley.
She is survived by her beloved daughters, Joan E. Ogrodnik, of Pitcairn, NY, Jean B. Humphries and her husband John, of Cornelia, GA, and Janice J. Faulkner and her husband Samuel, of W. Rumney, with whom she had made her home these past 27 years; stepson, John F. Bassett of Grafton, NH; four grandchildren, Vincent and Samuel Faulkner, of Rumney, John Faulkner, of Plymouth, Chris Ogrodnik and Dawn Twombley, of Harrisville, NY; four great-grandchildren, Brittany & Dallas Faulkner, of Rumney, Shawn Ogrodnik and Ashley Moore, of Harrisville, NY; a brother, Raymond G. Hersey, of East Andover, NH; one cousin, Emma Gosselin, of Sanbornton, NH; and many nieces and nephews whom she enjoyed exchanging letters and cards with throughout the years. Rev. Edward J. Charest, pastor of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, in Plymouth, will officiate.
