Eleanor M Cushing, 95, of Plymouth, passed away on March 1, 2022, at her home on Loon Lake Road where she lived with her daughter Edith, son in law Ray, and granddaughter Sarah. They lovingly cared for her the last 12 years after the love of her life Oscar R Cushing passed away in June of 2009.
Eleanor grew up in Plymouth in the lower interval area and attended school in the one room schoolhouse on Route 3 near Glove Hollow Tree Farm. As a child she would help her mom make baked goods to sell in the tearoom across from their home. She would always share stories of picking fresh fruit off the trees, the trains that would go by and stop to give them
coal to use for heat. As she grew, the family would move to Thornton where Eleanor worked with her mom at the White Duck Cottages housekeeping. She got to know the local police and fish and game officers as they would often stop by to visit the family. As time went on, her parents bought a home on Lake Wicwas on Meredith Center Road near the outlet. They also had a camp on Loon Lake in Plymouth. She always had stories to tell of the adventures living on the lakes.
In 1959, she married the love of her life Oscar Cushing at her sister Dorothy and brother-in-law Charles Robertson's home in Thornton, NH. Shortly afterwards, they built a home on Fairgrounds Road where they lived and raised their two children Edith and Ethel. Sadly, she had two children before them but lost them both. They also lived on Reservoir Rd at the Cushing farmhouse and moved to North River St. in 1967 and South River St. 1977 in Holderness. In 1996 they moved to live with their daughter Edith, son in law Ray, and granddaughter Sarah on Loon Lake Road in Plymouth.
Eleanor loved to play bingo with her friends and her granddaughter Sarah. She would often bring her famous whiskey cake to be shared with all. She loved to watch the golden girls, little house on the prairie, and many movies with Sarah, Dumb and Dumber and Home Alone the favorites. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, crochet and embroidery and flower gardening.
She loved going for rides on the back roads with Edie in the area. A quick ride would always turn into hours, Mom I will miss those rides.
Eleanor is predeceased by her husband Oscar Cushing, parents Earl and Cynthia Downing, brothers Kenny and Edward Downing and sister Dorothy Robertson.
Her many stories growing up and the love she had for her family will be forever missed but never forgotten. She leaves behind her daughter Edith, Son in law Raymond and Lovingly close granddaughter Sarah Barlow, her daughter Ethel, son in law Mark and grandchildren Chantel and Angelique. She also leaves behind her Maine Coon Cat, Felix, who she believed to be her husband reincarnated. He was by her side each day.
Grateful for being able to care for her mom, Edith would like to thank Ray and Sarah for all they have done to help.
A graveside service will be held in the Riverside Cemetery, Fairgrounds Road, Plymouth, on Tuesday, Apr. 26th, at 11am. The Rev. Christopher Drew will officiate.
The Mayhew Funeral Homes and Crematorium, in Plymouth and Meredith, are honored to assist the family with their arrangements.
