Elaine Brown Downs (95) of Campton, New Hampshire passed away peacefully at
home surrounded by family on September 21, 2024.
She is survived by her four children who all reside in New England: Susan Downs Schlegel (David),
Deborah White (Charles), Sharon Salomon Dunigan (Rick), Jeffrey Downs, ten grandchildren, and
fourteen great grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond Downs
Jr., sister, Imogene (Brown) Williams, and brother Emery Brown. Elaine is the daughter of Leo and
Dorothy Brown of Bangor, Maine. She graduated from Westbrook Junior College in Westbrook,
Maine in 1949.
As a resident of Greece, NY (1951-1987), Elaine and Ray focused on raising their family with an
active outdoor lifestyle. Elaine enjoyed traveling, camping, skiing, boating, and the family camp in
the Adirondack Mountains which will forever be known as “Mom’s Camp”. She was a committed
Girl Scout Leader and active in raising funds for local hospitals with the Buttonwood Twig Group.
Elaine and Ray enjoyed traveling with friends and family across 49 states as well as internationally.
Following their love of the outdoors, Elaine and Ray retired to the White Mountains where they built
homes in Campton and Holderness, NH that would be filled with visitors and celebrations for
decades to come.
Elaine’s memory lives on in simple pleasures; admiring birds, playing cards, family dinners, and
making babies smile.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Blair Cemetery in Campton,
