Donald "Don" Palmer, 80, of Bridgewater, passed away on April 21st, 2024, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and adventure that will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
Don was born on February 28, 1944, in Lawrence, MA, to Madeline (Merrill) and Donald Palmer Sr. He graduated from Technical High School in Springfield, MA class of 1962 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving as a helicopter crew chief in the 62nd Aviation Company Outlaws, Don spent a year in Vietnam, demonstrating his bravery and dedication to his country.
After completing his military service, Don pursued higher education, obtaining a Bachelor of Education from Fitchburg State College. He continued his studies and earned a Master of Administration, which he used to serve as a vocational director at Milford A.R.E.A High School, ConVal High School, and Plymouth Regional High School. Don's passion for education extended beyond the classroom, and he dedicated himself to assisting troubled youth, making a positive impact on their lives.
A devoted member of the Plymouth Rotary Club for many years, Don was passionate about giving back to his community. Post-retirement, he spent several years working at Ashland Lumber, where he continued to make a difference in the lives of those around him.
An avid outdoorsman, Don found solace and joy in nature. He spent countless days exploring lakes, hiking through forests, and climbing mountains. His love for the outdoors began in high school when he worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club, and in his 50s, he achieved the remarkable feat of hiking all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000-footers.
Don's love for the outdoors was only matched by his love for his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Murray), his granddaughter Braynae and her husband Walter Jinks, his sister Joan and her husband Paul Stowe, his brother-in-law Rufus Desso, and his great-grandsons Wyatt and Brayden Jinks. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his son James "Jamie" Palmer and his sister Eleanor Desso.
Don will be remembered for his unwavering love, his generous spirit, and his adventurous nature. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Don may have reached the summit of his final mountain, but his spirit will continue to inspire us all to reach new heights. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Rest in peace, Donzo.
