Reverend David A. Plant of Holderness, NH passed away in his home in his sleep in the morning hours of July 6, 2017.
David arrived into the world on December 27, 1941 and was the beloved adopted son of former police chief George Albert Plant and local school teacher Edith Ladd Plant of Holderness, NH. He grew up on Coxboro Road and attended the many schools his mother Edith taught at. David graduated Kennett High School in Conway NH and was interested in agricultural studies . He continued his education in a heartfelt pursuit of ministry and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology June 6th, 1964 from Berkshire Christian College in Lennox Massachusetts where he also had met and married his wife Peggy Jean Plant just 3 days after graduation.
During their marriage of 53 years, he served in ministry in many ways and in four locations including at his homestead. The three New Hampshire churches he ministered at were, at those times, Advent Christian Churches in Newport, Loudon Ridge and West Ossipee. A decision was made to move back to Holderness to be near his mother and father and he acquired his Uncle Bob's camp on family land and turned it into a home, gradually over the years. After his parents' passing, he began a prison ministry and became a member of Christian Motorcyclist Association. It was during a breakdown on the road to Sturgis that the generosity and assistance of Canadian Bikers so far from home inspired him to convert a dormant building his father had built into a safe, quiet gathering place for bikers in ministry to meet and sleep during Bike Week and so, The Carpenter's Shop came into being.
David was a DAVID of all trades...carpenter, builder, sawyer, mechanic, plumber, electrician, certified piano tuner, mason and fixer of anything. He was a musician and songwriter and could play guitar, piano, and organ by ear as well as with music and was also part of a gospel singing group called The Truth 'N Teens in the 60's and 70's. He had his own peculiar sense of humor that was hard to interpret even for his family. "That's just Dave."
David was an avid outdoorsman and hunted and fished most of his adult life and trapped on occasion to provide for his family. For a few seasons, he produced a significant amount of maple syrup in his rustic, charming saphouse. His resourcefulness and God given talents and love and devotion have provided immeasurably for his family and friends and is proof that only God can count the apples in one seed. His love for and relationship with Jesus and Christ's love and Grace within enabled him, in his day a strong man, to endure increasing physical limitations and overcome many and likely all spiritual battles.
David is survived by his wife, Peggy Jean, his daughter Jody Sue, his son Michael David, and by his only two grandsons Jeremiah Seth Conkey and Jesse Stefan Conkey. In the 80's, he became reunited with much of his blood family and is also survived by many blood relatives including his sisters Carolyn Pillsbury and Sylvia Cote and his brother Daniel Taylor.
A Graveside service will be held in the Green Grove Cemetery, NH Route #3, Ashland, on Monday at 11am. The Rev. Roger Brown, pastor of the Calvary Bible Church, in Meredith, will officiate.
David would share his mother's view concerning flowers. In lieu of flowers for him, make a child smile in some way, help the homeless in some way, or donate to a favorite charity. David, mindful and hopeful of the futures of many would probably plant a fruit tree in memory of a loved one or just because it is a pretty good idea.
