David Dickinson Closson

April 12, 1929 — July 7, 2014

David D. Closson (85), of Shepard Hill, peacefully passed at his home on Monday July 7, 2014. A third generation summer and full-time resident of Shepard Hill, David was born on April, 12, 1929 to Henry Whitney Closson and Elisabeth Dickinson Closson.

A graduate of Choate-Rosemary Hall School, he enlisted in the National Guard where he served for four years. In 1951, he joined the Record Print Shop in Plymouth, the job printers and publishers of the weekly Record and Ashland Citizen newspapers, which would later become the Record Citizen and the Record Enterprise. He retired from the Record Enterprise in 1998.

For more than 60 summers, David could be found plying the farthest reaches of Squam Lake piloting his beloved Fay and Bowen mahogany laker, the "Puffin III" - part of the Closson family since 1927.

An avid sailor, David was a member of The Squam Lake Lightning Fleet 332 for more than 50 years during which time he also served as Commodore for several years.

David was a gentle and life loving man, and an inspired photographer who had a knack for capturing moments in time that his friends and family have treasured for decades. A collector of big band music, he and his beloved wife, Millie, could be counted on as the first and last to grace a dance floor.

David was predeceased by his loving wife, Mildred Courtney Closson and his brother H.Terry Closson, and survived by his step-daughter Myrna Robinson.

His bright smile and his happy and kind spirit will be missed by his 12 nieces and nephews, Linda C. Coughlin, Deborah C. McCormack, H. Mark Closson, Christina B. Grauvogl, E. Terry Closson, Michelle D. Perry-Palmer, Andrea Perry LoBianco, Marc Whitney Perry, Sandra L. Martin, Rebecca R. McDougall, Steven H. Hiltz and Courtney J. Hiltz and his fifteen great nieces and nephews, together with his three great-great nieces and nephews.
