HOLDERNESS---Charles Henry Clifford Jr., 88, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024, peacefully in his sleep at his home on Little Squam in Holderness, NH.
Showing the world just how special he would be, Charles/Clif/Bus was born a Leap Year baby on February 29, 1936, in Quincy, Massachusetts. His parents, Charles Henry Clifford and Hazel Butson Clifford also welcomed a daughter, Sondra in 1938.
The family moved to Orford, New Hampshire in 1947, where they were the proprietors of Clifford’s Store (later known as Orford General Store) for 29 years. Charles graduated from Orford High School in 1955. He entered the Air Force, where he was a member of the 6th Wing Division. He spent three years in Roswell, New Mexico, followed by one year in Iceland.
Returning to Orford in 1960, he went to work for Equity Publishing as a Lineotype operator and married the mother of his children, Joan Tyler. In 1967, he and his business partner, John Lawrence Nicol, founded Clifford-Nicol Printing on Main Street in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Clifford-Nicol Printing was in operation until their retirement in 2000. Charles was a highly respected businessman in the area and was a director of the Pemigewasset National Bank for 24 years. He enjoyed a long retirement.
Charles was a wonderful father, husband, and friend. He was a very special man and will be missed by many.
Charles is survived by his wife, Maureen FitzPatrick Clifford; son, Charles Clifford (Sheri); daughter, Kate Grant (Charles); grandchildren, Charles Clifford, Caitlin Olsen (Jarrett), Christopher Grant (Adrienne) and Nicholas Grant; great grandchildren, Meadow and Lane; as well as his sister, Sondra Farnham; and many nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at the West Cemetery in Orford, NH.
