HEBRON---Bruce Allen Barnard, 84, a devoted family man and public servant, passed away on July 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born on November 26, 1940 to Arnold and Barbara (Thompson) Barnard. He married Virginia Watts in 1962, and they raised four children together.
Bruce was fortunate to live his entire life in Hebron. He attended grade school in Hebron's and Groton’s one-room schoolhouses through eighth grade and then chose to attend Plymouth High School where he played basketball and baseball. Bruce obtained a bachelor’s degree in education from Plymouth Teachers College where he played basketball participating on a New England championship winning team. He went on to teach mathematics for several years, changing careers to become a quality control manager, a plant manager, and then running his own business for over 50 years of designing and installing septic systems.
Bruce was very athletic and enjoyed many different sports. He was particularly proud of playing on the Plymouth town baseball team that played in a tournament in Kansas in the mid-1960s. Most of all, Bruce was extremely proud of his many years as a public servant in the town of Hebron. He served as a selectman for 30 years, the Conservation Commission for 27 years, Cemetery Sexton for 15 years, Acting Highway Supervisor for two years and Highway Supervisor for four years, a Forest Fire Warden, and also served on the Historic District Commission, the Heritage Commission, a Trustee of the Trust Funds, Library Trustee, Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Hazardous Mitigation Committee, and the Fire Department. He was truly proud to have served his community throughout his life.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia, and his four children, Tracey Steenbergen (Andrew), Kelli Bolcato (Joseph), Jenna Bard (Edmund), and Matthew Barnard (Bridget); his sister, Ann White and his brother, Alan Barnard; his grandchildren, Jason Steenbergen, Sarah Steenbergen, Bianca Van Winkle, Brianna Bolcato, Mason Bard, Isaac Barnard, and Elliot Barnard; three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
