Bernard Leslie Smith

Bernard Leslie Smith, 81, of Main St., New Hampton, died October 3, 2015, at Belknap County Home, Laconia, after a brief illness.

Born in Laconia, NH. on August 11, 1934, he was the son of Leslie Bernard and Harriet (Woodward) Smith.

Bernard grew up in New Hampton a graduated from local schools. In 1970, he graduated from Plymouth State College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in English education. Bernard lived for over sixty years at Rockledge Orchard, on Dana Hill Road, spending forty-six years of that with his beloved wife June. He was a winter resident of St. Petersburg, FL for many years.

Bernard taught mathematics and public speaking at Gunstock Junior College in Laconia. While there, he produced an original play, Androcles and the Lion, with a Federal Title #4 Grant. The production toured many elementary school and to the Laconia Public Library. While at Plymouth State College, Bernard received the The Marian Hammer Award for Theatrical Characterization as Prince of Morocco in The Merchant of Venice. He acted in several plays including; Polonius in Hamlet and the Title Role in Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid at Plymouth State College. Bernard also acted in The Tavern and Bus Stop, at the Lincoln, NH. Opera House

Bernard served as the assistant manager of the Tenney Mountain Ski Area, in Plymouth from 1967 to 1973. He then worked for the State of NH Department of Revenue Administration, from 1978 to 1989, and served as president/Owner of the Apple Appraisal Inc., with his son and daughter in law, Glen and Julie.

Bernard was a very active member of the community of New Hampton, serving in many capacities such as; twenty year member and past chairman for ten years of the New Hampton Planning Board, past master of both the New Hampton Subordinate Grange #123 and the New Hampton Juvenile Grange #33, sixty-one year member of the Mount Prospect Masonic Lodge #69 of Holderness, NH; he served a selectman of New Hampton and a member of the Newfound Area School Board.

Bernard was predeceased by his brother, Franklin and his sister Hilda McNally.

Bernard is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, June Rose (Smith) Smith of New Hampton, son Glen Cameron Smith and his wife Julie Merrill of New Hampton, daughters, Deborah Rose Smith-Cohen and her husband Brian of Herndon, VA., Darlette Smith of Plymouth, grandchildren, Hannah Rose Cohen, Samuel Martin Cohen, Faith Olivia Smith, Moriah Isabella Smith and Benjamin Smith, his sister, Melba Reiling of California and his brother, John Parker Smith of Florida, many nieces and nephews including, Deborah and Steve Reiling, Joey and Richard McNally, Karen Hryhorchuk, Susanne Adams and Brian Smith.
