LACONIA--- Barbara Pegnam, 92, died peacefully at the Taylor Home in Laconia NH on December 6, 2023, after a period of declining health during which her two sons were constantly by her side.
Barbara was born on July 19th, 1931, in Plymouth, NH, the daughter of William and Dorothy Garabedian.
Barbara’s father was a chaplain in the army who was stationed all over the world during her childhood including Okinawa and Texas. As a child, Barbara battled polio which led to life-long complications. Despite this, she always lived life with a cheerful, optimistic attitude and joyful enthusiasm for even routine events. Barbara was especially close to her only sibling, her sister and best friend, Joan Guardino. Together they shared many adventures and a truly special bond. Some of their favorite things to do together were to collect Anna Lee Dolls, shop and create magical Christmas memories that included piles of presents, all uniquely wrapped with beautiful paper and handmade ribbons.
As an adult, Barbara settled in Campton NH, where she raised her family and worked as a Secretary for the Superintendent of Schools Union 48. She cherished living in Campton and the special times she had with her cousins and her boys, including her sons’ large group of friends that she often oversaw who lovingly referred to her as “Mrs. P”. She spent her retirement years in Clearwater, Florida where she enjoyed the warm weather and sunny days.
Barbara was a gifted painter and an avid reader who always appreciated furry friends (real or stuffed), a trip to TJ Maxx, a well-cooked meal, puzzles, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Barbara moved to the Taylor home in December of 2019 to be closer to her loved ones.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister. She leaves behind her sons, Arthur Joseph “AJ” and his wife Kim and their son Zan of Thornton, NH, and John William “Jack” and his wife Marti and their children Katie and Will of Deerfield, NH.
Barbara will be buried with Joan at a private ceremony in the spring. Details on a memorial reception will be announced later.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the amazing staff members at Laconia Hospital and Taylor home who compassionately cared for Barbara during her final weeks.
