Arthur J. Greenfield

December 19, 1925 — August 22, 2013

Arthur J. Greenfield was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on December 19, 1925. After completing high school, he served for a short time in the Coast Guard, but received a medical discharge due to a childhood back injury. Arthur then attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in Latin American Studies.

In 1947, he married Mary (Jane) Ellsworth and moved to Lima, Peru in 1949. While in Peru, he was the country director of the international relief agency, Care, Inc., where he organized relief efforts for the victims of major earthquakes, oversaw regular distribution of food and other supplies, and even served as interpreter for and traveled with Helen Keller when she visited the region in 1955.

After eight years in Peru, Arthur and his family returned to the United States, settling in Woodbridge, Connecticut, where he raised his two children, became a published author, and served for many years as executive secretary of the Yale University Alumni Board. He went on to open his own advertising company, Greenfield Advertising, a business he continued until his retirement.

In 1991, he retired with his wife to Moultonborough, New Hampshire where they had summered for many years, and became active in the Center Harbor Congregational Church and the Meredith Rotary Club.

Arthur was outgoing, loved people, and was a prolific teller of jokes. He was an accomplished fly-fisherman and tied his own flies. He also had a passion for photography and spent many hours in his darkroom. He loved cooking and entertaining his friends and family. Those who knew him will remember him as a consummate gentleman.

Arthur died peacefully in Meredith, New Hampshire, on August 22, 2013. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Jane. He is survived by his daughter, Mary, of Sydney, Australia, his son Arthur, of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, and six grandchildren, Rachel, Sandy, Alison, Margot, Sara, and Laura.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central New Hampshire VNA and Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
