Alan Whitney passed away on October 13, 2023. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 25, 1943, to Abraham and June Plotnick.
He loved his father Abraham but had a truly special relationship with his mother June. A gifted student from an early age, Alan enrolled in The George Washington University on an academic scholarship at the age of 16. Alan later studied Sociology at Queens College and Yale University at the graduate level. He became a college professor and received numerous research grants at universities including The University of Chicago. Later in life, Alan settled into his beloved home of New Hampshire and owned retail ski stores and worked in the real estate industry.
Alan was a Bernie Sanders look-alike and think-alike and was a voracious reader, rock and roll music fan and collector. He was also an outdoor and underwater enthusiast and was happiest playing tennis, skiing the White Mountains in New Hampshire and scuba diving in the Cayman Islands. Alan was known for his clever “New York” sense of humor and it was common to find friends, family and clients laughing from Alan's stories and observations of the world. He is survived by his sister, brother-in law, two children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Alan's family also wants to thank his friends, especially Woody and Jill, and numerous other close friends in New Hampshire who loved Alan as family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Sunday 10/22: West Rumney Community Church 1218 Old Route 25, West Rumney, NH.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the World Wildlife Fund in memory of Alan Whitney.
