James Richard Cowern

February 16, 1958 — October 13, 2025

LACONIA --- James “Jim” Cowern passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at the age of 67 after a lengthy illness. Born during a massive snowstorm on February 16, 1958, in Bangor, Maine, Jim entered the world with a dramatic flair—delivered by his father, Richard—to parents Richard and Josephine Cowern.

Jim grew up in the Bristol/Plymouth area of New Hampshire and attended Plymouth State College. His career was as varied and adventurous as his spirit: from working as a salesman at his family’s Newfound Lake Marina, to roles at Bose Corporation, and later in St. Croix with Bohlke International and Hess Oil. Eventually, he returned to New Hampshire and worked at Lowe’s until his retirement.

Jim had a lifelong passion for water and snow sports. He loved teaching others to water ski, windsurf, and sail, and served as a snow ski instructor at Waterville Valley. His enthusiasm for the outdoors was matched by his love of music—he had a knack for discovering new artists before they hit the mainstream—as well as a keen interest in sports and politics.

Jim had a natural talent for striking up a conversation and making people feel at ease. Whether chatting with a stranger or catching up with an old friend, he had a way of turning small talk into something meaningful.

Jim left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His circle of friends stretched far and wide—from the places he lived to the passions he pursued—and he kept those connections alive with genuine and caring interest.

Jim is survived by his father, Richard Cowern, and his friend, Sara Gray as well as his uncle Ted, his aunt Irene and nephew, Colin. He was predeceased by his mother, Joyce. Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Jim at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Our Lady of Grace Chapel, 2 West Shore Rd, Bristol, NH. Burial will follow at the Hebron Village Cemetery in Hebron, NH.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jim's name to the Tunnels to Towers organization: https://t2t.org/ .
